Every time dangerous goods are presented for transportation, specific measures must be taken so that everyone who comes into contact with the dangerous contents of packages during transportation is properly warned about its potential danger. It must be possible to determine the contents of the packages and ways of handling the cargo. This is done by applying transport markings and danger signs to packages or unpacked products, which allows identifying dangerous cargo, determining the tension with the contents of dangerous packaging, ensuring the safety of the cargo during loading and unloading operations and transportation, and also makes it possible to take appropriate protective measures.
Requirements for joint loading of various dangerous goods into a vehicle (container), as well as measures to separate dangerous goods from food, animal feed and necessities, are also based on signs of danger.
Marking applied to packaging with dangerous goods does not have access to vehicles and containers. Access to dangerous goods may also be restricted. Therefore, in many cases, marking packages with dangerous goods is not enough. In most cases, the only source of information for other road users and emergency services about the characteristics of dangerous properties of goods is the marking of vehicles, containers and tanks.
Learning that road users do not learn the skills to use coded information about the dangerous properties of goods, they can make decisions only on the basis of information transmitted in graphic form. Emergency and rescue services, which are the first to clean up the scene of an accident, need information that can be distinguished and interpreted at a greater distance. For these vehicles, containers and tanks, when transporting dangerous goods, they are marked with danger signs.
To indicate that the transportation of cargo loaded into a vehicle is carried out according to special rules, vehicles carrying dangerous goods are marked with information tables of dangerous goods. Orange-colored plates make vehicles with such loads easily recognizable in the traffic flow.
When transporting bulk and bulk cargo, the marking can be attached only to vehicles, containers or tanks. To ensure the identification of the substances loaded in them and to determine their types of danger, the UN identification number and the danger number are indicated on tanks, as well as vehicles and containers in which dangerous goods are transported in bulk. The danger number allows the personnel of the emergency and rescue services, well trained in the use of coded information, to quickly and at a great distance determine the types and degree of danger of the cargo, even in the event of a fire.
